Leh Ladakh is a breathtaking union territory in northern India, globally renowned as the “Land of High Passes”. Perched at altitudes exceeding 3,000 metres in the Great Himalayas and Karakoram ranges, this high-altitude cold desert captivates travellers with its dramatic, stark landscapes. It features barren brown mountains juxtaposed against deep blue skies and pristine glacial lakes.
The Capital City: Leh
The historic town of Leh serves as the main urban hub and joint capital. It is dominated by the majestic, 17th-century Leh Palace, which overlooks a maze of narrow alleys and a vibrant bazaar. Visitors flock to the bustling Leh Main Bazaar to purchase authentic Tibetan handicrafts, apricots, and traditional woollens.
Cultural Heritage and Iconic Landmarks
Often called “Little Tibet,” the region features a deeply rooted Buddhist culture. Whitewashed monasteries like Thiksey, Hemis, and Diskit perch dramatically on rugged cliffs. Beyond spirituality, Ladakh is famous for its natural wonders, including:
    • Pangong Tso: A massive endorheic lake famous for changing its shades of blue.
    • Nubra Valley: Home to the unique double-humped Bactrian camels.
    • Umling La & Khardung La: Boasting some of the world’s highest motorable mountain passes.

Essential Travel Tips
  • Acclimatisation: Due to extreme heights, resting for the first 48 hours is mandatory to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
  • Best Time to Visit: The summer window from May to September is ideal, as highways from Manali and Srinagar open up. Flights operate to Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport year-round.
