Malana, a tiny village over the shimmering snow and lush green-capped mountains of the Parvati valley. Coveted as the city of the best hashish in the world.



1.  Malana is famous for ‘Malana Cream’, which has an intensely fragrant aroma and high oil content. And we all know that the Malana cream is the most expensive Marijuana in the Amsterdam menu.

2.  One cannot touch the localities or their belongings without their permission. The people are friendly there, but tourists are told to keep a distance and not touch anything in the village. In case of any physical contact, they will rush for a bath.

3. Videography is strictly prohibited, but a Malana girl smiles for the camera. The villagers are always willing to pose for a photograph.



4. The judiciary in Malana is different from that in the rest of India in many ways. They follow the godly approach instead of a rational one. To solve a conflict, they make a deep cut in the lamb foreleg then each of the two parties, poison it, and then sew it back with a needle. The party whose lamb dies first is said to lose the case.

5. Houses in Malana are two or three stories and each storey has a specific name and a purpose.

·         Ground floor (Khudang):  Acts as a cattle shed and where the firewood and fodder for the sheep and goats are stored.

·         The first floor(Gaying):  Used to store eatables, wool and for weaving woollen fabric.

·         The top floor (Pati): With an overhanging balcony, it is the actual living quarters.



6. School children are found either playing or helping their parents in the fields instead of attending school. So far only two students in the village have managed to reach class 12th!

7. The activity hall in front of which all Malana events, festivals, and celebrations take place.

8. Burning wood is also prohibited in the forests of Malana.

9. Hunting of wild animals is not allowed without the permission of the village council.



10. According to their rules, fixing nails on a tree is restricted as that could damage the tree.

11. Only dry twigs and branches are permitted to be carried outside the forest.

12. Police interference is not allowed, but if anyone wants to seek the help of police he has to pay a fine of Rupees thousand to the village council.
